Description

Rough play is all part of the development of red fox kits. It helps them become successful adults by learning to hunt as well as protect themselves. And by the way these kits were playing, they look like they'll do just fine out on their own. These two were part of a skulk of seven to 10. While others reported seeing 10, I've only ever witnessed seeing seven at the most at a time at the den on the west side of Ottawa. And every time I saw them, they were always playing and exploring, with the odd one attempting to nap. The nap length depended on whether the other siblings thought the nap had been long enough and felt it was time for the sleepy on to join in on the play. A typical red fox litter ranges from four to six, however, litter sizes can range from one to 10 depending on food availability.
